Abu Dhabi bans single-use plastic products. The ban will take effect from June 2022. The decision is based on Emirates' unified one-time plastic policy. The Environment Agency of Abu Dhabi (EAD) said it aims to gradually reduce the quantity of disposable plastic products and encourage the use of recyclable ones.
EAD encourages people to use multi-purpose and recyclable materials as part of a plan to completely ban the use of single-use plastics.
In this case, it plans to implement measures to reduce the demand for 16 single-use plastic products, including cups, stirrups, lids and cutlery. It also seeks to phase out disposable Styrofoam cups, plates and utensils.
The Authority says it has "extensively coordinated with strategic partners - especially plastic manufacturers and retailers" to ensure effective implementation of new technical standards for multi-use bags. EAD, an environmental agency, said it would launch a large-scale awareness campaign across the emirate to educate the public about the new procedures.
A comprehensive study is underway to introduce an incentive-based, single-use plastic water bottle return project in Abu Dhabi in collaboration with private and public institutions.
