Municipality officials in the Northern Emirates have warned residents to buy cheap food from street vendors. The municipalities of Sharjah, Ajman and Fujairah have launched strong action against illegal street food vendors. Sharjah Municipality has said it will not tolerate such activities during the holy month of Ramadan.
These illegal street vendors appear near the workers' quarters. Most of these use expired ingredients to make snacks. This often leads to food poisoning.
Sharjah Municipality Director General Obaid Saeed Al Tunaiji said that strict action has been taken against such activities that normally take place during Ramadan.
Al-Tunaiji said the municipality has prepared the necessary plans and has prepared all the relevant departments and teams to inspect the facilities for food preparation and serving.
Establishments can now obtain licenses to display food items outside their premises. Action will be taken not only against mobile vendors but also against small food outlets operating without a license from the municipality during Ramadan.
Al-Daid Municipality has also announced that it has developed a comprehensive plan to monitor food products during the holy month. Ajman and Fujairah municipalities have also banned mobile food vending.
